Ty Simpson Drafted by Rams

APRIL 24, 2026

The Los Angeles Rams surprised a lot of people by picking Ty Simpson with the 13th pick in the NFL Draft. I have said this before, teams know a lot more about their situations than fans and media do. I trust the process, as the Rams have had success in the draft with Les Snead as general manager and Sean McVay as head coach. Simpson was a talented quarterback at University of Alabama, but with limited experience. This gives the Rams a chance to develop a quarterback while Matthew Stafford is still the starter. I’ll admit I didn’t like the pick at first, but I also recognize they know what they’re doing. I wanted them to pick a wide receiver, but it’s a deep wide receiver draft. Maybe they felt they can still get a good one in the second or third round, while Simpson likely wouldn’t have been available later. The financial aspect of the pick also makes sense. Stafford is still a high-level quarterback, and the Rams should remain a strong team this year. But he may only play one or two more seasons. If Simpson becomes the starter in a couple of years, he’ll still be on a rookie contract. That gives the Rams flexibility to extend key players like Puka Nacua, Byron Young, Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, and Steve Avila. I didn’t think they’d be able to keep both Young and Verse, but now that could be possible. The Rams also have high expectations for this season, so they probably don’t expect to be picking this high again next year. Anything can happen, but if they’re successful, they’ll likely be drafting much lower in a 2026 class that’s already being talked about as strong at quarterback. Then again, a year ago many fans and media thought this year’s draft would be loaded with quarterbacks, and for various reasons that didn’t really happen. As a fan, it’s probably best to trust the process. The Rams have had enough success in the draft that we should have some faith in what they are doing.
