The NFL Draft is today. This is the day when all NFL fans have new hope. Every team feels like they just got better, and every fan can convince themselves that their team made the right moves. The reality is that a lot of the players selected this weekend, including today in the first round, are not going to have NFL success. That’s just how it works. These players will eventually be labeled as busts by the media and fans. The truth is, this is not the fault of these players. They are the players that they are. They have worked their whole lives just to get to this moment, but that does not mean they will have success after this moment. The failure comes down to the evaluation of these players by the teams. Teams do the best they can, but they will make mistakes. These mistakes happen every year, no matter how much time and effort is put into scouting and preparation. Fans will sometimes say teams should have done this or that, but the fact is that NFL staffs are smarter than any fans. There is a reason why they work in the NFL and fans don’t. They have more information, more access, and spend countless hours studying these players. Fans need to accept that this is just a guessing game, guesses that have had a lot of thought, study, and preparation put into them, but at the end of the day, it’s still just a guess. That’s why I think draft grades that come out at the end of the draft are a complete waste. People rush to judge picks right away when no one actually knows anything yet. No one will know what the results of the draft are for at least a year, if not longer. Enjoy the draft, enjoy the excitement, and enjoy the hope that comes with it, but don’t get too excited or too down about the results for your favorite team.
